The ECMO Coordinator works in close collaboration with the ECMO Medical Director, Perfusionists and ECMO team members facilitating initiation, management, and removal of ECMO. The ECMO Coordinator ensures ECMO practices are concurrent with ELSO guidelines and organization, operational, and strategic goals, policies, and guidelines. The ECMO Coordinator demonstrates a commitment to quality and excellence, promoting SMH as an ECMO Center of Excellence.  Along with ECMO leadership, the ECMO Coordinator ensures the ECMO program is compliant with ELSO guidelines and recommendations. The ECMO Coordinator will provide direct clinical care and participation in clinical rounds. Full Time, Day Shift

8:00am-5:00pm

Weekends as needed 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Licensed Perfusionist by the State of Illinois (IDFPR) required

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Current BLS/CPR certification required.
  • Current ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire.

Experience:

  • 3 years of Perfusionist or ECMO experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant ECMO hospital experience preferred.
  • Preferred background in perfusion or ECMO specialist role.

Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Care –
  • Utilizes his/her extensive knowledge of ECMO for all phases of patient care and helps initiate care plans using best practice while demonstrating excellent bedside manners.
  • Ensures patient care practices are compliant with policy, procedures and guidelines.
  • Develops skill set in priming ECMO circuits, rapid initiation of ECMO, and removal of ECMO
  • Interprets selective laboratory/diagnostic tests.
  • Initiates and maintains communication and collaboration with privileged ECMO providers, care team members, bedside nurses, and patients/families to develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for each patient.
  • Actively participates in daily multidisciplinary rounds, offering support in ECMO management. Actively participates in call.
  1. Assessment –
  • Accurately identifies and diagnoses changes in patient condition, identifies alternatives, makes recommendations and implements decided treatments, and evaluates results to communicate to the team
  • Assesses functionality of equipment and makes recommendations for changes as needed. Identifies patient/family education needs and ensures adequate information sharing.
  1. Coordination –
  • Coordinates ECMO services in collaboration with the ECMO Medical Director.
  • Provides clinical consultation to ECMO privileged providers on ECMO interventions.
  • Assumes a leading role in the clinical setting.
  • Develops and maintains ECMO documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Initiates and facilitates all steps of hospital-to-hospital transfers for ECMO patients
  • Initiates and facilitates all steps of in-hospital transportation for ECMO patients.
  1. Quality Initiatives –
  • Develops and implements quality initiatives for the ECMO program.
  • Coordinates registry information to the ELSO.
  • Participates in the formal review of ECMO cases with the medical director.
  • Participates in obtaining and maintaining ECMO Center of Excellence Award.
  • Responsible for data collection and data entry in the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry in collaboration with a clinical data specialist.
  1. Additional Responsibilities –
  • Performs ongoing evaluation for the ECMO team specialists’ performance and relays these evaluations to the ECMO medical director though verbal and written communication. Provides constructive feedback to employees as directed by the ECMO medical director. Encourages professionalism amongst team members and encourages others to take project leadership responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Ensures appropriate ECMO scheduling and staffing levels are maintained in collaboration with the hospital administration.
  • Actively participates in the growth of the program and implementation of new initiatives.
  • Organizes and helps facilitate the ECMO team meetings, training, and wet labs.
  • Participates in and organizes interviews for the selection of ECMO specialist team members.
  • Receptive to feedback from hospital leaders and ECMO medical director.
  • Assists with the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines, as well as the delegation and implementation of protocols.
  • Provides recommendations related to order set development and the electronic medical record including documentation.
  • Accommodates any additional and emerging needs and ECMO related responsibilities
  1. Education –
  • Creates, develops, disseminates, and implements appropriate education/training courses, material, and competency checklists as approved by the ECMO team.
  • Determines the type of educational activities required for new procedures and/or equipment.
  • Coordinates the utilization of equipment in various program areas and ensures end users receive education to understand the operations and functionality of the equipment.
  • Establishes and manages evaluation forms.
  • Provides classroom training, bedside orientation, and precepts new ECMO specialists providing direct care.
  • Facilitates in-service for equipment utilized for ECMO.
  • Seeks out opportunities to present at medical meetings, network with other ECMO centers, and attend ECMO meetings to stay current on ECMO management and new technology
  • Involved in product evaluation and assessment and will assist with program development and implementation of new technology.
  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
